THE CHALLENGE

Balancing Heart with Scale

The challenge was balancing heart with scale. CLP needed a brand that felt deeply human and hopeful, yet strong enough to grow into a national platform — one that could unify their books, films, and storytelling projects under a single, cohesive identity.

THE BIG IDEA

Literacy = Freedom

Inspired by Frederick Douglass’s words — “Once you learn to read, you will be forever free” — this concept became the foundation of the brand’s visual language. Every illustration, color, and design choice reflects that feeling of movement, joy, and possibility that comes from learning to read.

the solution

Literacy expressed through metaphor — illustrations that capture freedom, joy, and innocence.

the solution

From Story to System

The new brand gave CLP a clear and cohesive identity that could grow with them. It translated seamlessly across books, films, and digital campaigns, creating national recognition while staying true to the heart of their mission. The illustrations and storytelling system have become the foundation for how CLP communicates — inspiring new volunteers and expanding their reach in communities across the country.
